Business records documenting the acquisition of acreage for residential development in St. Luke's Parish, Beaufort District, S.C., on the Colleton River. Volume documents process by which the investors were incorporated by act of legislature in Dec. 1864, and the stockholders' plans to develop a city on the site, promoting its appeal to shipping as a "deep-water" port. Officials of the corporation included James M. Eason, president, and William Gregg, Jr., E[phraim] M. Seabrook, and George A. Bowman, directors; a charter for a rail line through the area to be developed was granted to the Deep Water & Western Rail Road Company.
